guid to taking self portraits

guid to taking self portraits
Self portraits is something that interests me a lot.
It takes a little bit of skill to take a picture of yourself without looking at it and it turning out professional and good looking.

so, here are the things you are going to want to have in order to take good self portraits:

A good camera (obviously) (preferably with a remote, and/or a timer)

a tripod, so you can have something to put your camera on while you go off and pose.

here are the things that you are going to want to know before you start:

READ THE MANUEL FOR THE CAMERA!!! this is EXTREMELY important. You need to know the different settings and what to turn it to to make different things happen. If you don't, your portraits will not turn out as good. This goes for all kinds of photography.

Experiment with the zoom before you take the shot. Put something in the spot that you want to pose in and and adjust the zoom according to what you are going to do.

I am not much help in the aria of Photoshopping, because I like to just play with the light to make my pictures look the way I want them to.

again, read the Manuel to adjust according to the light you are using.

I hope you found this tip helpful/interesting. Go have fun, you gorgeous people!

Edible Cookie Dough!

Edible Cookie Dough!
Hello everyone! Olivia here :) Merry Christmas Eve, Merry Early Christmas, Merry Late Festivus, Happy Late Hanukkah, Happy Holidays, and most of all, Happy AW YEAH YOU SURVIVED THE APOCALYPSE. Along with the rest of the world. More prattle from me after the tip, let's begin!

So... cookie dough is basically cookies times awesome times infinity… if that makes any since. But unfortunately, nature is the ultimate troll, and decided to curse cookie dough with salmonella for all of time…

UNTIL NOW.

Thanks to this amazing recipe (courtesy of Tumblr, of course) you can now eat raw cookie dough to your heart’s content with no fear of illness! The recipe has no eggs, too, so it’s great for people with allergies (although milk and butter are involved, as well as chocolate chips).

Edible Cookie Dough
Prep time: 10 minutes
Makes: 1 serving

Ingredients:
~1/2 cup flour
~Pinch of salt
~3 tbsp butter
~1/4 cup brown sugar
~2 tbsp white sugar
~3/4 tsp vanilla extract
~1 tbsp milk
~1/4 cup chocolate chips (mini works best)

Directions:

o1) Combine flour, white sugar, brown sugar, salt, butter, vanilla, and milk in a bowl.

o2) Then, fold in chocolate chips.

Oh yeah… IT’S THAT SIMPLE.

There are a couple things you can do with this, such as:

~Put it in a little bowl and eat it like a soft dessert
~Roll the dough into little balls and put them into the fridge for a few hours. Once they’re cool, you can throw them into ice cream or use them for other desserts... it would be AWESOME on top of brownies ^_^
~If you roll them into bigger balls of dough, you can stick lollipop sticks into them for cookie pops!

Have fun and good luck…

AND NOW I GET TO ACTUALLY TALK TO YOU ALL! See, I’m becoming a better tip girl, I’m containing all of my prattle at the bottom of the tip, and I’ve finally learned how to use fillers… I’m proud of myself! So, speaking of tip girl stuff… I’m thinking of starting a tumblr for tip girls! Not just us on this account, but from all over Polyvore… we can submit tips into one handy collection, as well as reblog any recipes, tutorials, random things, etc. that we might come across. Is anyone interested in the idea?

Oh yeah… so my coat’s been missing for a while now, and so last night I was looking for it nonstop because all I have now is an old leather jacket and it’s getting really cold here in VA (it SNOWED THIS MORNING! AHHHHHHHH! My sister and I were so excited, we were running down the stairs like little kids to go see xD) So anyways, I was looking in a bunch of closets… when I spotted a MODCLOTH BOX ON THE TOP ROW! I’m not the type to ruin the surprise of Christmas gifts, so I didn’t look… but I’m still so excited now! Seriously, you could get me anything from that store and I’d be freakishly happy.

I hope you all have been having a great winter break! See you!
xx Olivia

DIY Polka Dot Jeans!

DIY Polka Dot Jeans!
Hello everyone! Olivia here :) As you know, I love, love, LOVE polka dots, and I was infinitely happy when I finally got my hands on a pair of them! I understand that a lot of pairs are on the pricey side though (I got mine on sale)... and that's when I found this A-MAY-ZING tutorial online!

What you'll need:

-Jeans
-Fabric paint in a color of your choice (usually white or black, but experiment! Metallic paints look AWESOME with this)
-Round cap, sponge, stencil, or template (any size)
-Paper plate
-Small paint brush

o1) First, pour the paint onto your paper plate. I recommend practicing with your dotter a bit on something like a paper towel.

o2) Dip the end of your dotter in the paint and start dotting on the front of your jeans. Work your way down one side, and then do the other. Be random with your placement!

o3) You can take a small paintbrush and fill in any dots that might need a bit more paint, depending on what you use to do your dots.

o4) Let the front side dry completely before doing the backside- it will probably take around 8 hours.

o5) Repeat on the backside and let them dry overnight.

o6) Wait 48 hours before you wash them, and hang them dry!

Enjoy and good luck! Expect some more tips from me over break, too, while I have the time! :)

Holiday Beauty Essentials!

Holiday Beauty Essentials!
Hello! I’m so sorry it’s been so long since I’ve done any tips… I don’t know about the other tip girls, but it’s been NaNoWriMo month for me, so I’ve been really busy… plus I had two tech weeks! Things are finally starting to calm down a bit for me, so I decided it’s more than ready for me to start coming back… especially when I have a bright, shiny, and wonderful new laptop to work on! Early Christmas gifts are the best, aren’t they? Although it’s only early because my old laptop broke (seriously, 3/4s of the screen stopped displaying!) and my dad wanted his old one back… hee hee.

Well, there’s quite a few things I’ve been lusting over at Ulta and Sephora that I’d love to find in my stocking… or, of course, give to the many other ladies on my list! Which reminds me… expect some more upcoming holiday tips, including Secret Santa and New Year’s Eve tips! I’m planning to host a movie marathon with my friends, so I’ve already been planning some ideas… I should probably get to the tip, shouldn’t I? I have a bad habit of talking on and on in my tips about things you probably don’t pay much attention to :P From now on, I think I’ll try to contain my prattle at the bottom of my tips.

Anyways, on to the tip! Here’s a list of beauty essentials to put at the top of your holiday wish list. Special thanks to my mom and a couple of my friends for help! For each of my essentials I’ll put some information, and then a product or two that I recommend- all of the prices/stores are just what I found online: you can find most anything at Ulta or Sephora, and even at drugstores, and often for cheaper than what they say (gotta love holiday sales!)

o1) Eyeshadow Primer ◕‿◕

Okay, I don’t know if you guys know this stuff exists or not, but my mom and I literally just discovered this and it works WONDERS! You just put the tiniest bit on your eyelids before applying your eye makeup and it makes your eye makeup last a million times longer! No creasing, no fading… it’s amazing! I had a show last night that involved a whole lot of jumping and dancing around (I played an insanely hyper candy factory worker) as well as a TON of sparkly purple eye makeup- I put it on at 4:30 PM, and it looked just as great at 11:30 that night!

•Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion- $20, Ulta
•Smashbox Photo Finish Lid Primer, $20, Smashbox Cosmetics
•Pop Beauty Eye Magnet Primer, $15, Ulta

o2) Colored Mascara ◕‿◕

I’m a total mascara addict, and colored mascara is no exception! I have a dark plum mascara that I just love, but I’m also dying to get a bright blue or purple, or maybe even some other colors.

•Benefit Badgal Plum Mascara, $19, Benefit Cosmetics
•Diorshow Mascara in Azure Blue, $25, Sephora
•Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Volume Effect Faux Cils in Fascinating Violet, $30, Sephora
•Sephora Full Action Extreme Effect Mascara in Purple or Blue, $15, Sephora
•Or you can also go the DIY route and grab some eyeshadow and clear mascara- I recommend Maybelline GreatLash Clear Mascara, $6, Ulta. A great thing about this is that it’s a great gift for any younger girls on your list (little sisters, anyone?) who may be eager to start wearing makeup, but can’t delve into anything real adventurous yet.

o3) Holiday Lip Gloss ◕‿◕

Now is the time to grab all of the delicious holiday flavors of lip gloss- while they last! I love holiday flavors- gingerbread, spice, pumpkin, peppermint… and I love lip gloss, too! Plus, your lips can easily dry out from the cold weather, so get some lip balm while you can!

•Liplicious Holiday Traditions Lip Gloss in Twisted Peppermint, Vanilla Bean Noel, Winter Candy Apple, or Whoopie Pie, $8, Bath and Body Works
•Philosophy Flavored Lip Shine in Candy Cane, Marshmellow Cone, Candy Ribbons, or Old-Fashioned Eggnog, $10, Philosophy
•EoS Smooth Sphere Lip Balm in Sweet Mint, $4, Ulta
•C.O. Bigelow Mentha Lip Shine in Vanilla Mint or Cinnamint, $8, Bath and Body Works

o4) Sparkly Nails ◕‿◕

A little- or a lot- of sparkle is perfect for spreading holiday cheer, and nails should be no exception! Not all of these are sparkly, actually, but I just picked pretty winter colors too. A really fun thing to do with friends is to all grab a couple cute nail polish colors and swap with each other!

•OPI Skyfall Collection Nail Lacquer in GoldenEye, Skyfall, The Living Daylights, and Tomorrow Never Dies, $9, Ulta (Who wouldn’t want James Bond-inspired nails? Seriously!)
•Essie Leading Lady Collection Nail Polish in Beyond Cozy and Leading Lady, $8, Essie
•OPI Muppets Collection Nail Lacquer in Excuse Moi, Fresh Frog of Bel Air, Rainbow Connection, and Warm & Fozzie, $6, Amazon
•Sally Hansen Salon Effects Nail Polish Strips in Shiny New Year, $10, Ulta

o5) Hand Cream ◕‿◕

I don’t know about you guys, but my hands get so dry in winter, so I always need a good lotion on hand!

•True Blue Spa Shea Cashmere Hand Cream, $10, Bath and Body Works
•EoS Travel Everyday Hand Lotion in Berry Blossom, $4, Ulta
•Philosophy Amazing Grace Perfumed Hand Cream, $15, Philosophy

o6) Pretty Perfume ◕‿◕

And to top it off, a bouquet of sweet scents to make everyone on your list happy!

•…To make this short, any Fine Fragrance Mist, $14, from Bath and Body Works. There’s so many scents I love that I couldn’t choose!
•Victoria’s Secret Pink All-Over Body Mini Mist in Sweet & Flirty and Soft & Dreamy, $8, Bath and Body Works
•Aromatherapy Body Mist in Eucalyptus Spearmint and Lavender Vanilla, $15, Bath and Body Works

I hope you enjoyed this tip, and I’m definitely going to try and tip more often! Do you guys have any beauty necessities for the winter season? Tell me in the comments! As always, I love tip requests & replies. Good luck!

Memorization Tricks!

Memorization Tricks!
Hey everyone! Olivia here. It’s been a while, hasn’t it? ^_^ Well, I’m back! And I’m giving a tip on memorization because right now I have to do a ton of it! I’m in a performance of a play called That Night Follows Day and I have to say a ton of lines- like, memorizing whole pages! Memorization is probably one of the least important parts of theatre, in most cases- but it’s still really important! Plus, who’s ever had to memorize a speech or a poem before? Here are some great tips to help with it! A couple of them are from my awesome director, too :) This are mainly for lines, but you can also use them for speeches, or just studying!

o1) Work Backwards ♥

Okay, this sounds kind of weird but it really helps! Start from the last lines of a paragraph, or the last paragraph in a speech, monologue, etc. Move from the end to the beginning. Have you ever noticed that you remember the beginning of something a lot easier than the end? That’s because people tend to focus on the beginning much more, and then start worrying about what happens next. This is the reason this trick works so well: it flips this over so that you work on the end more than the beginning, so that when it’s time to recite you’re moving from the unfamiliar to the comfortable.

o2) Break It Up ♥

This one’s super simple yet super helpful! Simply break up the text you need to memorize into sections by paragraphs, stanzas, or groups of paragraphs. Then work on one section at a time.

o3) Write It Down ♥

Try testing yourself by writing down lines you need to remember! Writing helps you remember things easier due to the connections between the hand and the brain. Highlight important parts- did you know that pink highlighter has been tested as the best to remember things with?

o4) Use Actions ♥

This is kinda like the tip before! Use motions to help you remember things. For example, if you’re memorizing lines for a play like I am, use gestures that pertain to your lines. If you have to walk somewhere while saying a certain line, walk while you’re rehearsing it. Connecting one thing to another helps you remember things- here, we’re matching actions to words. Remember when your teachers in elementary or even middle school would make you draw a picture to remember things like vocabulary words? Or those “interactive notebook” things? That’s using this tip! Even if you don’t have particular movements to do, just walking around will help because you use both your left and right brain.

o5) Listen ♥

Record yourself saying what you need to memorize (taking breaks in between lines if other people are speaking.) Then, put it on a CD or your Ipod (You might have to convert it into an .mp3 to do this. If you have any trouble, tell me!) Now, you can listen to it in the car, on the school bus, while on the computer, during class… xD

o6) Color Code ♥

This one’s good if you learn visually! Color-code what you need to memorize by sections, topics, or key concepts. Some teachers actually require you to color-code notes- my science teacher’s a total freak about it, it’s hilarious xD

o7) Break Up Your Time ♥

Instead of long sessions of cramming information, try breaking it up into 10-15 minute increments throughout the day, every day. When I memorize scripts, I spend 10 minutes on the bus ride to school, 10 minutes during lunch, 10 minutes during study hall (if I can), 10 minutes on the bus ride back, and then 10 minutes in the evening. Short memorization periods means that you don’t have to battle brain fatigue, so you can devote more time to the task at hand. Between line memorization, you can work on math homework, practice piano, or do anything else you need to do, and you can concentrate well on all of it because you’re doing it in short increments!

o8) Line Ball ♥

This is something we all like to do together in the cast! All of the big sections we have to memorize are in unison, so we play a little game called Line Ball together for the first 10-15 minutes of rehearsal, as well as during breaks. Our director thought it up! Basically, everyone stands in a circle, and we have a ball. The person with the ball starts out by saying the first line, and then tosses it to someone else. That person has to then say the next line and toss it to someone else. It goes on and on! If someone skips, messes up, or forgets a line, we all say it together three times so that we all know it. It’s fun and it really helps!

Hope these help! If you have any questions, ask me! :)

Halloween constume:Zombie/ Zombie slayer
Zombie:
you can use the idea in set, or you could get get a plain white shirt and splatter red paint on it, maybe cut it up a bit.
for pants just get some ripped jeans and you are good to go. maybe even splatter red paint on them as well
shoes are pretty unlimited in options, but avoid heels.

for makeup just get some dark purple eyeshadow and but that ALL around your eyes in a but circle. you want that sunken in look. get green white and red face paint. mix green white together to get a very pale green and put that all over your face and down your neck. even on your arms if you wanna go that far. get the red put a line from the corner of your mouth to look like blood.

Zombie slayer:
again, you could go with the look i have in the set, or you could do the same shirt idea i have for the zombie, again with ripped jeans, and i would recommend going for combat boots.
get a fake weapon and paint it black.
for makeup get red face paint and but a few "cuts" on your face. i would also recommend going for a pale foundation. for eyes get a light purple and put it around your eyes so you look like you have lost a lot of sleep.

I think that's all, I hope you liked!
